Dear Reader

Welcome to today’s post of Rosy’s Ramblings. If you click here, it will take you to the home page of RR where you will find a whole host of interesting posts, together with the serialisation of my novel, The Mysterious Disappearance of Marsha Boden. Each chapter is numbered so you can go right back and read from Chapter 1.

If some of the posts are locked and you want to access them, this is because they are for paid subscribers and if you really can’t afford to subscribe for a small monthly fee, let me know and I will gift you a subscription. You can contact me directly at: rosygee345@gmail.com

Now for today’s post.

Are you a good sales person? Could you spend every spare minute of your life selling something? I’m guessing not. Most sales people I know are overly talkative, extremely confident, and sometimes brash and that is so not me. But sadly, if I don’t get my writing out there, nobody is going to read it. It’s all about marketing and I am such a technophobe that it sometimes holds me back. Honestly, I spend more time on Twitter, my Amazon author page - you can view or buy my book here by the way - Substack chat, Medium, Vocal - the list goes on and on. Oh and if you are kind enough to buy my book, A Collection of Poetry Sprinkled with Some Short Stories, would you be kind enough to leave me a review on Amazon? (You see, it never ends…)

I built my own website - no mean feat, let me tell you - and even tried to enlist the help of others, who I was more than happy to pay, but nobody came through.

My goal, which I constantly strive for and work towards, is to become a published novelist via the traditional route or better still, through a literary agent, but by the time I have made myself visible on every platform that I am able to use due to my less-than-sparkling technological prowess, I sometimes don’t have the energy to write because my brain has been frazzled by all the noise of trying to get people to buy into my writing. But the best part is that it’s free unless you are kind enough to subscribe for a minimal monthly fee and help to support my writing habit. (It is an addiction: I can’t stop).

So what can I do to succeed? What is the secret of success?

According to this article by Lolly Daskal the following 10 qualities are required if you want to become highly successful:

Drive

Self-reliance

Willpower

Patience

Integrity

Passion

Connection

Optimism

Self-confidence

Communication

Do you have any or all of these? I certainly do: some of them in spades, one or two in spoonfuls. In fact, I have the majority of them apart from connection and communication - which I am working on. Oh, yes, also the self-confidence one, but it is coming along. I must have faith in myself and more importantly, in my writing.

I love writing my twice-weekly articles for you here on Substack and I hope you enjoy reading my musings, anecdotes, and general observations on life which I write about when I am not working four days a week as a virtual Legal Assistant - two days remotely and two days office-based (yuk!) but hey-ho, it pays the bills and I do really enjoy the work.

But I would much rather be sitting here behind my keyboard which I can, of course, take with me to any corner of the globe - white sandy beach, rolling green countryside, challenging links golf course - and getting my teeth (or should I say fingers?) into writing another novel.

As a freelancer, I love the flexibility of my working hours but I am not fully in control of my own destiny. I must be available at certain times to perform certain tasks. I guess the bottom line is that I want to be accountable to myself. And yes, I realize if I do get taken on by a literary agent or publisher, I will be accountable to them to some degree but I will be in control of my own destiny. Isn’t that ultimately what we all want? To be at the helm of the ship that we are sailing through life?

What is your goal or what are you striving for? Do you dream about achieving something which seems beyond your reach? I often wonder whether I will ever ‘make it’ as a novelist but do you know what? I am going to keep trying, keep pushing ahead, be optimistic and build my connections and improve upon communications.

If you have achieved your lifelong goal or dream, do let me know by leaving a comment and if you haven’t done so yet, PLEASE leave me a comment. We can do this. Together we can push forward and realize our dreams. After all, if you don’t have a dream, how can it come true?

Thank you for reading Rosy’s Ramblings and please share this post if you have enjoyed it. And don’t forget TO PRESS THE HEART to turn it red and let me know you have enjoyed being here.

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are.

Take care,

Rosy x

Patience--I have it. But it is TOUGH. Waiting on the word of an editor --or actually, the acquisitions folks--for almost a year now, for one manuscript. Waiting for a library book for research. Waiting (while actively writing) for the right words for a particular scene.

As for spending energy on this newsletter thing we do as well as our novel work... Rosy, put your novel first. Work on it each day, THEN work on the newsletter. Do that for yourself. t will work both for the novel and for the newsletter.

I taught writing for decades. I gave to students. I saw their careers flourish, win prizes, and more. And I kept trying to combine teaching, writing, child-raising... I regret always sacrificing to teaching. The institution I worked for threw me under a big bus, and I finally walked away.

I still have great affection for those students, many successful writers now! But it's a balance; balance in favour of your novels and what brings you the MOST joy.

Happy 2023 to you! May it be as productive as you want and need!
